In this audiovisual essay, I try to make sense of the changing landscape around the open-cast lignite mining pit Cottbus-Nord in southern Brandenburg, Germany, experimenting with music, sound, text, and footage I shot over 10 years. The area is part of a renaturation process and has been flooded since 2018, turning the former mining pit, with its 1,900 hectares, into the largest lake in the Lusatia region. I have been documenting this process since 2016. Text excerpts from the novel “Sanditz” by Lukas Rietzschel, Read by Stefan Rink & Anne S. Chahine, Music by Hasith nimantha from Pixabay, Song: Lost signal, Sound effect by Darina Evstafeva from Pixabay, Camera and video editing by Anne S. Chahine, Sound mixing by Stefan Rink, Footage shot at the Cottbuser Ostsee between 2016-2026
